Detox time

From time to time I'd like to change my regular breakfast for a detox juice. This juice is full of ingredients that are good for you.

Peach - Cucumber - Celery

  • 1 stack of celery
  • 1/2 cucumber
  • 2 peaches
  • 1/2 glass of water
Juice it! You can also blend the ingredients but the juice will be a bit thicker and you get more of a smoothie. The peaches ensure that the celery and cucumber don't dominate the taste.

What is your favourite juice?

Veggie quinoa - shrimps - guacamole

Hey smoothies,

I recently made this dinner and it was so good I had to share it with you
Everything is fresh and homemade and as far is I know all products are organic. I grow the herbs myself in my garden so I have always fresh ones. Quinoa I bought at the bioshop but it's also available at grocery stores. For this recipe I used regular quinoa but I have als a mixture with red quinoa and other grains. It's really tasty. Even my mom liked it before she knew it where grains instead of a regular carb dish.

For the ones that do not know quinoa: Quinoa is a grain that can is an alternative for carbs (pasta, bread, potato, ...). It's high in protein and it's been quiet popular for the last few years. I've been using it before it has become a trend and I'm a big fan of it. It's a great switch for the regular carbs and you can use it in sweet dishes as well. I have roasted quinoa with honey (bought at the bioshop) for breakfast and it's yummie!

Veggie quinoa - shrimps - guacamole

quinoa
Ingredients
parsley
mint
spring onions
chive
garlic
sweet red pepper
quinoa
Chop the herbs into tiny pieces, Put some olive oil in a pan and add a garlic clove  and the spring onions. Make sure they get glazed and not baked so don't put your stove too high.
Then add the quinoa and add 3 volumes of water. Let it cook for about 15 min ( taste if it's good for you, I like it when it's still a bit 'al dente'). The water should be absorbed by the quinoa and there shouldn't be anymore water in the pan.
Chop the sweet pepper into tiny pieces and add it to the quinoa mixture. Let it stove for a couple of minutes until the peppers are ready but make sure the quinoa doesn't burn so put it on a medium heath and put on a lid so the quinoa keeps moistened. When the peppers are ready, take the pan from the stove and add the other herbs and mix well.

guacamole
Ingredients:
1 avocado
1 tomato
2 tbsp olive oil
2 tbsp lemon juice
dried chili pepper mix
fresh cilantro

Mash the avocado in a small mixing bowl with 1 squeezed clove of garlic, 2 tablespoons of lemon juice and  2 tablespoons of olive oil. Add some salt and a bit of chili pepper flakes to taste. Cut the tomato in dices and cut the cilantro. Add it to the guacamole mixture.

For the shrimps you can choose how you want to cook them. I poached them in a bit of vegetable broth but you can grill or fry them as well.

Bon appétit!

I'll be back very soon!

Hi smoothies,

It has been a pretty long time I shared something with you guys but I've been quiet busy lately!
I've been looking intensively for an internship lately. Next year I'm graduating in my master of Business Administration option Finance & Risk- yeey - ! The second semester is entirely dedicated to an internship so that's what's taking my time lately, contacting companies to apply for an internship.
Besides that I have also a couple of exams I have to retake. I passed the second semester all of my exams very well but in the first semester we had 9 courses and I dropped 3 of them because I didn't think I was able to pass all of them. One exam was Tuesday and it went very well :-)! The next one is Saturday and the last one is next Friday the 30th of August. So thumbs up for me!

I promise you guys the next post will be very soon and it will be worth waiting for because I want to write about some very exciting relevant topics!

SUMMER!

Hi Smoothies,

Finally, I can proudly say that my exams are finished!
- Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey -
It was about time because I couldn't take these short nights of sleep anylonger!

Now summer holidays are taking off and the heath finally found this little country, all I want to do is putting together some funky summerstyles, making fresh and tasty summersalades, and having a night out in the city with my girlfriends. Within a 2 weeks I go to Spain for some earned relaxing! I can't wait to get my new bikini's on and take a jump in the pool.

I really like this Bikini. I found it on pinterest but unfortunately I can"t find where to buy it.

This is something I am definitely going to try this summer when the heath is becoming too much. Such a cool way to cool off.

I don't know what's your favorite in these temperatures but I love to light up the bbq and grill some fresh fish or meat  and serve it with a tasty an fresh summer salad. The quinoa salad with avocado and cilantro looks very delicious to me. So does the salsas!
If it's a bit warmer, heavy food is a no go for me. I prefer light and fresh dishes. Another refreshing favorite of mine is a rocket ice lolly! On those moments I can't take the heath anymore, nothing is more refreshing than a rocket popsicle!

What is your favorite refreshment during summer months?

Would you like to see some summer salad recipes?

Saucy Salads

Hi Smoothies,
What a wonderful day it was, don’t you think? Finally I could get those shorts out of my closet I bought a few months ago with the release of the new SS collection. The shorts are from pull&bear.

In this weather I prefer to eat a light fresh lunch like a salad. When it comes to salads, I never eat the same one I guess. Mostly I put them together with leftovers from last night’s dinner or at the beginning of the week I make some preparations in advance so I can just take a bit out of the plastic fridge storage box.
There are a few ingredients I have always in my pantry to throw in my salad.
  • canned chickpeas
  • canned black lentils
  • canned tuna
  • quinoa
  • canned corn
i have the not canned versions also in my pantry, however as I’m most of the times in a hurry I usually use the canned versions. Some veggies I chop in advance and store them in the fridge for the rest of the week so I can add them to my salad whenever I want
Veggies to store:

  • leafs (not chopping of course but just clean it already)
  • cucumber
  • red beet
  • carrots (grate them yourself! much better!)
  • tomatoes
  • apple (sprinkle them with lemon juice to prevent them from turning brown)

Sometimes I also boil a couple of eggs, cook some pasta or quinoa in advance.
To make a salad I always start with some leafs. I prefer plain lettuce but it’s a bit of work to clean it but it’s definitely my favorite. And I don’t like the prepackaged ones because I find that you always get the harder white chunks of the lettuce which I don’t like. If I don’t feel like cleaning a lettuce I buy a prepackaged mix of leafs. Mostly I choose a mix of young lettuce and rocket or young lettuce and red beet. Sometimes I add some leafs of fresh spinach or watercress too.
Secondly I always fill it up with some cucumber and tomato chunks
Then I add the remaining ingredients I feel like eating that day. That can be strawberries, goat cheese and some chickpeas. Or another combo!
The last step is to add some pepper and salt to taste and a bit of olive oil. I’m not the kind of person that likes a fancy vinaigrette. Just a simple good olive oil I like way much more! When I make a salad that includes Mozzarella cheese I also add some Italian herb mix.

There are some combo’s I ended up with so far and turned out delicious!

Dress up your dorm room

Hi Smoothies,
as a student I live in a dorm room and you probably all know those room aren’t very big. I’m actually one of the lucky ones I guess because mine isn’t so tiny as most dorms are (ca. 30m²). Anyhow, spending a lot of time there makes a 30 square meters not that big. This is the first step to having your own place and to me it’s important that I create a cozy and warm place that feels like home.
I’d like to share a few tips to decorate small places like a dorm room or any other room you want to freshen up to your own taste.

- white white white

work with light colors. Dark colors make your room look even smaller. A light color on your wall can give the room a much larger look. If you don’t know a great shade that fits with your furniture then opt for just white. You can never do wrong with white as it always goes with everything. If you want to have a more sophisticated look than choose a white with an undertone of another color. Maybe you like white with an olive undertone or maybe you like it with a yellow undertone, which reflects the natural light even more btw.
Here are a few examples of light shades to use
whiteshadesforyourwalls

Before you start painting your walls ask your landlord if you’re allowed to do this because some can be difficult about it. If you’re not allowed to paint your walls opt for light colored furniture ( Further there are some more tips on furniture)

- Keep it low

whenever you buy furniture for a small space try to avoid high closets. they downsize your room. Instead, choose for lower cabinets that aren’t higher than your lower body.

add some transparent furniture or decorating stuff. This way, the piece will not block your sight and your room will look much brighter and far less messy.

- My mirror staring back at me

putting a mirror on your wall makes your room appear bigger. Put it on a wall facing the window so it reflects natural light and it's like you're having another window in your room ( = more light = room appears to be bigger)

- hide your stuff
When you live on only a few square meters, your room looks already messy when only a few things are lying around. So hide your stuff behind closet doors. Go for a closed wardrobe instead of an open one. Maybe you might find an open wardrobe nicer but when your wardrobe is not perfectly clean it gives a sloppy look.
When you’re like me and you spill out your clothes over the room after a long day, then buy a clothes rack so you can lay on your clothes of that day and put them away later.

- Try some diy decorating
The fun part about decorating is having an unique piece in your room made by yourself. And when your girlfriends come by and say “whooo what a cool vase” yep that’s the moment you can proudly say “ I made it myself!”. And yes I already had those moments and yes it felt very rewarding.
You don’t have to be such a handyman to do some creative DIY projects ( nope I’m not a handy person). Just use your inspiration!
e.g. When another jar of Nutella is empty from one of my inmates in my building I wash it out and use it as a candle holder. During the Autumn I add a few chestnuts or acorns to decorate. Now I have some candy in it to decorate. Just notice that I use led candle lights as it is much safer especially when you use crafty materials in it like me, but basically the reason why I use led candle lights  is because it’s not allowed to put candles in my room. Another idea is to put lace paper around the border, you know the kind of paper your grandma puts on a cake stand or something. ONLY do this when you use led candle lights!

As a girl you probably have a lot of jewelry like me. I have a beautiful jewelry box in which a few of my jewels are stored (as it is way too small to store all of it) but you probably recognize the situation when you’re in a hurry and want to change something but you don’t feel like putting it away in your jewelry box and you just lay it there on your nightstand or somewhere else it can get lost? Anyways, this situation happens  a lot to me and as I don’t want my beautiful earrings to get lost I took a few cups of my mom’s old china that she doesn’t use anymore to use it as a jewelry cup for those times when I’m in a hurry.

I hope I helped you out with some inspiration for your dorm room.
If you want to get crafty but don’t have some old china or an old closet to paint than take a look at your local second hand store. I love to wander at the local second hand stores for antique here in Ghent. In Ghent there are a few on the afrikalaan such as Ecoshop and Tweedehands Shop. But also at the Kringloopwinkel you can find some nice treasures.

or take a look at a local flee market, no doubt you’ll find a unique piece out there!
